Boys` Brigade History

History: The Boys` Brigade was formed in Glasgow in 1883 by William Alexander Smith. Originally a uniformed youth organisation for boys aged 12-18, 8-11 were admitted in 1917 and 5-8 in 1970`s. It is part of a church or other Christian organisation, but is open to all boys aged 4+-22 and girls were admitted 14-22 as part of Amicus in 1990s and in girls sections 4-22 from 1st January 2009

Our Object is:

The advancement of Christ`s kingdom among boys( and in our case girls) and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Revererence, Discipline and Self - Respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness. This in more modern language means obedience to our creator and the way he wishes us to live our lives in peace, love and harmony with our fellow humankind, reverence for the things of his creation, the environment, our planet and all living creatures on it, by showing discipline in or lives never to put ourselves above the common good and self respect to ensure we reach our maximum potential, for the good of others.

Our Company was formed in 1970 by its first Captain Chris Jackson, and has continued under it`s present Captain Dr Tony Drury-Smith since 1976.  To see more of our history view the History page.

Meetings:  At Coal Aston Methodist Church, on Monday evenings in term time.

Anchor Boys:                      From School age to 8.                5.30-6.30pm

Junior Section:                  From 8-Year 6 inclusive             6.30 - 7.45pm

Band practice                                                                            7.45-8.05         

Company Section:                  Year 7 onwards                           7 -9pm

Amicus Group:                  14-22 inclusive by invitation.     As announced

Monthly Celebration:        All age                                            2nd Sunday 9.30.am( except August)

Membership: We are open to boys and young men age 4+ to 22 and young women aged 14-22

                         Since the early 1990s when our Girls Brigade closed, at the request of our church, we have been open to sisters and friends of members, and other girls where staffing and group makeup allow.

Safeguarding your child:  All members of our staff have undergone an enhanced CRB check and those in leadership roles will have undergone Youth Leader Training and other training as appropriate, eg Camp and Holiday Leadership, Camp Craft, MLC, etc. In addition many of our staff are experienced in working with young people at work as well as BB.
